Denis James Cleland Nevin – Obituary –

September 13, 1932 – April 16, 2024

In loving memory ~

Denis Nevin grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he met and married the girl he always considered the most beautiful in any room: Lillian Keenan. He was a secondary school mathematics teacher not only in Belfast and Kimberley, but also in Hawera, New Zealand, Rossburn, MB and Ladysmith, BC.

Denis was a fantastic Irish tenor and enthusiastic dramatist, who directed or acted in many school and community theater productions. He loved his student trips to Europe, and in 1977 he requested and was granted a sabbatical to take Lil and their three children on a six-month camper trip to the cultural highlights of France, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria, Switzerland and Germany .

Later in life, he and Lillian traveled extensively together, including to Japan, the Netherlands, Belize, Guatemala, Mexico and many parts of Northern Ireland, Canada and the US.

One of their greatest joys was the long list of friends they made wherever they lived and visited, but Kimberley was definitely their happiest place. My father taught math at Selkirk for many years, and he was the first computer science teacher in the district. He loved the creativity and possibilities of computers, at a time when few people even knew about them.

Denis is survived by his wife Lillian and children Caroline (Nancy), Ngaire (Brian) and David (Izumi). Also Sister Rosemary, sisters-in-law Maisie and Julie, and many dear nieces and nephews.

Most of all, Denis loved his time as a grandfather and proudly wore a T-shirt with the names of all his grandchildren on it: Zachary, Aidan, Jordan, Bella, Allanna, Jenna and Liam.

If you would like to contribute something in his memory, in lieu of flowers we encourage you to make a donation to the charity of your choice or to the Richmond Hospital Foundation. (

in appreciation for his care.
