Canadian police arrest murder of Sikh activist – Firstpost

Canadian police have made arrests in connection with the 2023 fatal shooting of Sikh-Canadian activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, months after Canada accused Indian government agents of involvement in the killing, according to media reports.

Police have arrested “members of an alleged assassination crew who investigators believe were ordered by the government of India to kill Nijjar,” CBC News sources said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in September that Canadian authorities were pursuing charges linking Indian government agents to the fatal shooting of Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. New Delhi dismissed Trudeau’s claim as “absurd.”

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation previously said the RCMP had arrested members of an alleged assassination squad. It quoted a source as saying that investigators had identified the suspects in Canada several months ago and had kept them under close surveillance.

Nijjar, 45, was shot dead on June 18 outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population.

Canada had pressured India to cooperate in the investigation. The US later revealed that it had thwarted an assassination attempt on a Sikh separatist on its soil.

The presence of Sikh separatist groups in Canada has long frustrated New Delhi. Nijjar was labeled a ‘terrorist’ by India.

Neither the RCMP nor the Indian mission in Ottawa were immediately available for comment.
