Indian relay teams to participate in the World Athletics Relay with an aim to win the quota for the Paris Olympics

The Indian 4x400m relay teams will look to secure their place in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics when they take part in the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 from Saturday.

A 15-member Indian athletics contingent, comprising men, women and mixed relay teams, will try to clinch their places, with the men’s relay team looking to make the biggest impact.

The two-day World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 will see a total of 32 teams compete in the men’s 4x400m, 27 teams in the women’s 4x400m and 30 teams in the mixed 4x400m events.

All eyes will be on the Indian men’s relay team given their good performances at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and the 2023 World Championships. The quartet of Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Anas Yahiya, Muhammad Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh went on to win the gold medal at the Asian Playing in Hangzhou in 2023, clocking in at 3:01.58.

Under the World Relay format for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the top two teams in each heat will advance to the final on Saturday. They will also secure their place for the Olympic Games in Paris. The placement positions for the Olympic courts will be decided in the final on Sunday.

All other teams will compete in an extra round on Sunday, with the top two teams in each heat also qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team also includes 2018 Jakarta Asian Games mixed relay gold medalist Arokia Rajiv, Noah Nirmal Tom, Yashas Palaksha and Avinash Krishna Kumar. The four athletes also took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

India will also have a seasoned seven-member squad for the women’s 4x400m relay, led by multiple Asian Games gold medalist MR Poovamma. The squad also features the Hangzhou Asian Games silver medal-winning team of Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan. Rupal and Jyothika Sri Dandi are the other Indian members.

India will also have high expectations from the mixed 4x400m relay event after their silver medal-winning performance at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
