The death toll from the floods in Brazil rises to 29 dead and 60 missing


BRASILIA May 3, 2024 (Saba) – The death toll from floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in southern Brazil has risen to 29 dead and at least 60 missing.

According to local media, authorities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul declared a state of emergency on Friday in anticipation of more rain.

The damage caused by the storms affected nearly 150 cities, forcing more than 10,000 people from their homes.

Governor Eduardo Lette of Rio Grande do Sul state said it was the worst climate disaster to hit the border state with Uruguay and Argentina.

At the end of March, heavy rain in southeastern Brazil killed 25 people in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espiritu Santo.
