Petro wants the Colombian election authority to stop investigating him

President Gustavo Petro’s lawyer has asked the Colombian Congress to investigate alleged irregularities in the 2022 elections.

In a letter, lawyer Mauricio Pava asked Congress to take over the ongoing investigation into Petro conducted by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

According to Pava, the president’s “integral” immunity from prosecution prohibits the CNE from investigating Petro.

The election authority has investigated four allegations related to illegal financing of Petro’s 2022 campaign.

The House Impeachment Committee, which has the authority to investigate presidents, investigated three of these claims.

Petro has suggested that the CNE investigations are part of a broader attempt by Colombia’s far right to oust his government.

The president wants the House committee, chaired by one of Petro’s political allies, to take on these investigations.

Both the CNE and Congress have been criticized for the political nature of their investigations or their decisions not to investigate.
