Crews deploy a 12-person military vessel to assist with rescue efforts in southern Brazil

The Brazilian military announced the deployment of boats to support rescue efforts in the flood-hit Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, including a type of vessel typically used to manage pontoon bridges.

Video released by the state’s southern military command on Friday, May 3, shows the ship being lowered into the water in the capital Porto Alegre. The ship weighs six tons and can carry 12 people, the command said.

By early Friday evening, the death toll from the flooding had risen to 39, with 68 people still missing, according to government officials. Credit: Comando Militar do Sul via Storyful
