Holly Blair, executive director of the Maine Principals’ Association, said Swan was chosen out of 700 elementary schools in Maine as “Maine’s Best Elementary School Principal.”

“That means Mr. Swan is one of the absolute best directors in the entire United States,” she said.

He will represent Maine at a ceremony with other directors across the country in Washington, D.C., in October.

Regional School Unit 56 Superintendent Pam Doyen told the meeting in making the announcement: “Dr. Swan is absolutely wonderful, and I wrote in his recommendation for this that I believe he is the epitome of what you look for in an elementary school principal. He does it all and he does it well. Congratulations, Doctor Swan.”

Swan thanked her and Blair and said he was “very humbled and very grateful” to students and staff. “I think it goes without saying that when an award is presented to such a principal, it is a reflection on our school.”

During the selection process, Swan said he was asked what motivated him as a director.

He said his response was, “I get to come to school every day and work with teachers who are completely committed to the students, and that’s great.”

The Maine Principals’ Association wrote of him in a press release: “Dr. Swan was chosen because he has a leadership style that encompasses all possibilities in a nice mix. He is reflective, authentic, sincere, innovative, data-driven, humorous and student and community oriented. He has a great balance between fun and encouraging staff to continue to strive for excellence.”

Swan will be honored by the association at the Night of Excellence awards dinner on May 23 at the Augusta Civic Center.
