Garbage burning, fanned by the wind, consumes palapa and wasteland

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, QR – A group of residents of Felipe Carrillo Puerto needed help controlling an out-of-control trash burning. While emergency responders arrived, they were unable to save a palapa or vacant lot that was in the path of the fire.

Strong winds presented a challenge Sunday for a group of residents trying to extinguish a wildfire. The fire started in the Cecilio Chi neighborhood of the city of Felipe Carrillo Puerto when a deliberate waste burning took a turn.

A pile of rubbish was burned on a private property around 2pm when strong winds fanned the small fire. Residents did their best to control the fast-moving fire as they waited for firefighters.

Emergency crews arrived at the intersection of 56th and 61st Streets due to thick smoke and burning grass.
