Three Indian nationals have been arrested and charged over the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year, reports said.

This was stated by Assistant Commissioner David Teboul of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

At a press conference on Friday, he added that police were “investigating whether there are any links with the government of India.”

Teboul said: “There are separate and distinct investigations into these matters, certainly not limited to the involvement of the people arrested today, and these efforts include investigating links to the Government of India.”

The arrested suspects have been identified as Karan Brar, Karanpreet Singh and Kamalpreet Singh, all men in their 20s, who lived in Edmonton.

Court documents show that Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karan Brar each face one charge of first-degree murder and one charge of conspiracy to commit murder in Nijjar’s death.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, was shot dead by masked gunmen outside a temple in suburban Vancouver on June 18, 2023. The killing sparked a diplomatic row between Canada and India after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed the Indian state may have been involved.
