Ovsicori: Rincón de la Vieja “has conditions” for an eruption

QCOSTARICA – The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (Ovsicori) – volcanological and seismological observatory of Costa Rica – said that the Rincon de la Vieja volcanoa very active volcano, prone to large eruptions, is likely to erupt in the ‘fairly near future’.

This is evident from a report by Geoffroy Avord, a volcanologist from Ovsicori, who explained that there are analyzes that determine this type of behavior related to volcanic activity.

According to Avord, there is currently a trend towards an increase due to the volcanic activity that has occurred in recent months.

In recent months, the Rincón de la Vieja volcano has experienced a significant increase in volcanic seismicity and its earthquake record is the largest in the past five years.

“The Rincón de la Vieja volcano is still very active. Although there are not many manifestations, the outgassing remains stable and compact; and what we have is a significant deformation over the last few months, which is also still increasing due to seismic activity,” the expert said.

The Rincón de la Vieja volcano is one of the most active massifs in Costa Rica and has recently experienced a sudden increase in seismic activity.

The Rincón de La Vieja is a complex stratovolcano located in the northwest of the country, in the canton of Liberia in the province of Guanacaste, 23 km NNE of the city of Liberia, at an altitude of 1,895 meters above sea level, with an area between 100 and 130 square kilometers.

The volcano is part of the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. The first reference to eruptions in archives during the colonial era appears in 1765 in the archives of the Maritime Museum of Spain. In 1844, a series of “extraordinary and constant” eruptions lighting up Lake Nicaragua are reported, attributed to Rincón de la Vieja.
