Toronto, May 3 (PTI) The Indian diplomatic mission here has identified the Indian couple who died in an accident involving their grandchild during a multi-vehicle collision when Canadian police chased a liquor store robbery suspect earlier this week drove in the direction.

“Sincere condolences on the tragic loss of Indian nationals, Mr. Manivannan, Mrs. Mahalakshmi and their grandchild in the collision on Highway 401,” the Consulate General of India in Toronto wrote on X on Friday.

The Consulate General “met the relatives at the hospital and assured all possible assistance. We are in contact with Canadian authorities,” the post said.

The couple, believed to be from Tamil Nadu, was visiting Canada. The couple’s three-month-old grandson was also killed in the multi-vehicle collision. Highway 401 was closed for several hours after the incident Monday, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Thursday.

The 21-year-old robbery suspect was also killed in the crash, which involved at least six vehicles, CBC News previously reported.

All four people were pronounced dead at the scene on Highway 401 in Whitby, about 50 km east of Toronto.

The SIU had previously said that two of the victims, a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were visiting from India. However, the names of the victims were not released.

The agency said the child’s parents, his 33-year-old father and 27-year-old mother, were traveling in the same vehicle and were taken to the hospital.

The mother’s injuries are serious, the SIU said.

Officials say the deadly chase began with a robbery at a liquor store in Bowmanville and ended about 20 minutes later after the suspect in a van led Durham police on a high-speed chase into oncoming traffic on Highway 401.

A 38-year-old male passenger from the van was also taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
